Roulette is a game based virtually completely on luck. The dealer (also called a "croupier") spins a wheel with numbers from zero to 36 spread out in pockets around it, switching between red and black colored slots. Then, he rolls a small white ball in the opposite direction to the spin of the wheel. The game stops when the ball falls into one of the slots. Players can wager on a single pocket or a mixture of number groups. Players place their bets on the roulette table, also called a "layout".
The American roulette table has an additional "00" green pocket, which gives the house a higher advantage. European Roulette tables have only a single zero, which gives the casino a lower advantage. When a player is betting on one number at a table in the U.S., the house edge is 5.26%; on a European table, the house edge is only 2.70%.
At this point, we'll discuss the different types of bets you can make.
Inside Bets: These bets are called "Inside Bets" since the chips go inside the numbered grid on the layout. These bets typically have better payouts and longer odds.
Straight up
A straight up is a bet on only one number. The player places their chips on top of the number they want.
Split
A split is a bet on any two neighboring numbers. The player places their chip on the line between the numbered squares.
Street
A Street is a bet on three numbers in a row, like 13, 14, and 15; or 7, 8, and 9. The player places their chips on the end of the row.
Corner
A corner bet is a bet on four numbers that intersect on the layout. The player places their chips on four numbers at the intersection of these four numbers. For example, 25, 26, 28, and 29.
Six Number
A six number bet is a bet on six numbers that cover two adjacent streets. For example, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. The player places their chips at the end of the line separating the two rows
Trio
A trio is a bet on three numbers, 0, 1, and 2 or 00, 2, and 3. The player places their chips at the convergence of the three numbers.
Five Number
A five number bet covers the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and is only found in American Roulette. It is also the worst bet in roulette with the highest house edge.
Outside Bets: These bets are called "Outside Bets" since the chips go outside the numbered grid on the layout. These bets typically have lower payouts and better odds. Each of these bets has a special designated area on the layout.
Low/High
A player can bet whether the pocket where the ball falls will be a low (1-18) number or a high (19-36) number.
Red/Black
A player can bet on whether the pocket where the ball falls will be red or black. If the ball falls in a green 0 or 00 slot, all red/black bets lose.
Even/Odd
A player can bet whether the pocket where the ball falls will be an even or odd number. 0 and 00 are not considered even or odd numbers for this bet. If the ball falls in a green 0 or 00 slot, all even/odd bets lose.
Dozens
A player can bet whether the pocket where the ball falls will be between 1 and 12, between 13 and 24 or between 25 and 36.
Columns
A player can bet whether the pocket where the ball falls will be in the left, middle or right column on the layout.
